Israel needs US for existence

Israeli President Shimon Peres has acknowledged that Israel's existence depends on its friendship with the United States.

"We cannot exist alone. For our existence we need the friendship of the United States of America. It doesn't sound easy, but this is the truth," he said.

In a speech to Jewish leaders on Thursday evening broadcast by Israel Army Radio, Peres urged the Israelis to try to meet US demands in order to be assured of their existence. "As the United States is trying to understand the security needs of Israel, we Israelis ourselves must understand the security needs of the United States," said Peres.

He made the remarks after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected Washington's call to extend a partial 10-month moratorium on the settlement activities, which expired last month.

The expiry of the freeze led to the halt of direct talks between Netanyahu and acting Palestinian Authority Chief Mahmoud Abbas. The talks were re-launched in Washington on September 2.

US President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton have both repeatedly called on Tel Aviv to extend the freeze to help the continuation of the negotiations.
