Russia test-fires new missile

Russia has successfully test-fired its new nuclear-capable Bulava ballistic missile from a nuclear submarine, after a string of failures.

Russia's Defense Ministry announced that the country launched the Bulava intercontinental ballistic missile successfully on Thursday, advancing its weapons program after a series of failures which had raised doubts over the military's most expensive weapons program.

Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Alexei Kuznetsov told AP in an interview that the missile was launched from the Dmitry Donskoi nuclear submarine under the water in the White Sea, hitting its target in the Kura firing area on the Kamchatka peninsula on the Pacific Ocean some 6,000 kilometers (3,730 miles) away. "The parameters of the trajectory worked out as planned and the warheads successfully landed at the Kura firing area," AFP quoted a Defense Ministry statement as saying.

It was the 13th test of the Bulava while only five of the 12 previous test fires were considered to be successful.

The missile was last test-fired in December but the testing ended in one of the most embarrassing failures for Russia's military in recent years.

It had disintegrated early in its flight, producing a spectacular plume of light that was visible over Norway.

Bulava is a new-generation missile that is able to escape any potential missile defense system. It has the capability to start quickly and to perform unusual maneuvers.
